Checks & Balances
Checks & Balances: closely related to separation of powers, any system that allows each branch of government to amend or veto acts of another branch so as to prevent any one branch from exerting too much power. Often this represents a circular arrangement.
Example one: The president is the commander in
chief of the army and the navy but only congress can declare war.
Example two: The president can nominate judges.
Example three: Congress controls the budget.
